Description

Scripture: Anyone who proves victorious I will make into a pillar in the sanctuary of my God, and it will stay there for ever; I will inscribe on it the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem which is coming down from my God in heaven, and my own new name as well. (Rev 3,12)

Focus: God is everywhere, in any situation. You can meet Him anytime. You don’t always have to go to the “classical” places of prayer for meeting Him. Any kind of place will do it. We invite you to discover Him in the place you live. Meet Him on the streets among people, in people, in the buildings, on a tram/bus, in a market, or sitting on a bank, on the stairs, having a cup of coffee.

Prayer for the grace of the day: Lord give me the grace I could discover your presence in the city today.

Exercise:

  • Let’s find a place, where you feel that there is holy ground. Take off your shoes and taste the feeling! You can bless the town, and the people living in.
  • Pray for the people whom you will meet today. Get on a tram or a bus. Find a person who needs consolation and give them some chocolate or a flower, or a gift to him/her.
  • Seek out a homeless person to talk to. Ask him/her whether he/she needs tea or coffee. Buy two cups of it and drink it with him/her.
  • Take several pieces of paper and write on them: This is a holy place. Then seek out the places where you feel this holiness, put the sheet down there, and let it there.

Reading: Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium 71

The new Jerusalem, the holy city (cf. Rev 21:2-4), is the goal towards which all of humanity is moving. It is curious that God’s revelation tells us that the fullness of humanity and of history is realized in a city. We need to look at our cities with a contemplative gaze, a gaze of faith which sees God dwelling in their homes, in their streets and squares. God’s presence accompanies the sincere efforts of individuals and groups to find encouragement and meaning in their lives. He dwells among them, fostering solidarity, fraternity, and the desire for goodness, truth and justice. This presence must not be contrived but found, uncovered. God does not hide himself from those who seek him with a sincere heart, even though they do so tentatively, in a vague and haphazard manner.
